30/11/2012 - Obtaining Finance for SMEs

Obtaining finance – a guide for Small and Medium Enterprises.

In November 2012 the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) issued a 16 page guide to SME Finance.

The full document is available on our website click here PDF
and within the guide we have highlighted a few key points including:

  • Business loans – in almost all instances there will be a need for a business to put up security against the loan, and/or the directors to give personal guarantees.
  • Bank overdrafts – are repayable on demand, security may still need to be provided.
  • Enterprise Finance Guarantee – Lenders are likely to request personal guarantees (even though the scheme has some government support).
  • Asset based lending / invoice discounting and factoring – Personal guarantees rarely required, funding tracks sales.. but..diminishes with shrinking orders.
  • Equity Finance (shares) – investors expect a higher potential return (than bank).. processs demanding, costly and time consuming.. business may suffer as time Is devoted to the deal.
  • Funding Innovations – ‘Crowdfunding’ – Take note of FSA Warning on adequacy of protection for investors.
